“Get everything you need to build a website your way.”
Wix is a no-code website builder that enables individuals and businesses to create websites, blogs, portfolios, online stores, and booking pages. The platform combines a drag-and-drop editor, templates, hosting, SEO, marketing, CRM, and commerce features in one interface.
Since 2026, Wix has also positioned the editor with Wix Harmony as a hybrid AI editor with prompting plus manual fine control.

Origin: Israel ⓘ Wix.com Ltd., 5 Yunitsman St., Tel Aviv, Israel. Investor Relations lists the headquarters in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Core For growing websites and initial business features; includes more storage, multi-cloud hosting, basic marketing, payments, basic eCommerce, scheduling/service features, and more collaborators.
Business For businesses with growth; includes more storage, standard marketing suite, payments, standard eCommerce, scheduling/services, and more collaborators.
Business Elite For larger requirements; includes unlimited storage, multi-cloud hosting, Advanced Marketing Suite, payments, Advanced eCommerce, scheduling/services, Advanced Developer Platform, and many collaborators. Other Wix Enterprise Custom enterprise solution for larger organizations with more complex governance, support, developer, and scaling requirements. Wix refers to enterprise solutions as a separate area.
Wix Studio / Velo / Custom Hosting Solutions For agencies, developers, and more complex web projects; Wix states that selected custom hosting solutions may be available with Velo in the enterprise context.
Target audience
Wix is aimed at a very broad spectrum: beginners with no programming knowledge, creatives needing a portfolio or blog, self-employed professionals, local service providers, coaches, small shops, and growing SMEs. Officially, Wix positions the builder for business sites, online stores, blogs, and other website types; Harmony is additionally described for entrepreneurs, creators, and SMBs. For very large organizations with multi-site, governance, and security requirements, however, the focus shifts toward Wix Studio Enterprise.
Outstanding features
The strongest differentiation currently lies in the combination of a classic website builder and AI. With Wix Harmony, websites, pages, and sections can be generated via prompt and then further edited visually; the AI agent Aria supports this directly in the editor. In addition, there are 2,000+ templates, AI tools for text, images, and meta tags, integrated SEO aids, commerce functions, bookings, CRM, marketing, and a multi-layered security and hosting infrastructure. The top-tier plan even includes advanced developer features.
Main use cases
Typical use scenarios include company websites, landing pages, portfolios, blogs, appointment booking pages, and online stores. Wix is particularly strong where a user or a small team wants to publish a website quickly without developer resources and then manage content, leads, bookings, or sales themselves. For highly scaled enterprise scenarios, multiple brands, or stricter governance setups, the Studio/Enterprise track is more relevant than the pure standard builder.
Usage & notes
The free version is sufficient for tests, side projects, or first portfolios; for a professional public presence, however, in practice you usually need at least a paid plan, because only then is branding removed and a custom domain connected. Anyone who needs payments, e-commerce, or bookings should plan from Core upward. From a data protection perspective, Wix should not be used “blindly”: cookie banners, privacy notices, third-party apps, and specific data flows must be set up properly. With AI features, it is also relevant that Wix uses external AI service providers; Wix itself points out that AI can make mistakes and results should be reviewed. For image-generating AI, Wix also explicitly states that no personal data should be entered when using Stability-based image generation.
| Target audience | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Private individuals | Very suitable – for simple websites, portfolios, blogs, club websites, and quick publishing without programming. According to its own presentation, Wix offers website creation for free and with an AI website builder. |
| Self-employed / freelancers | Very suitable – for landing pages, appointment booking, portfolios, simple shops, marketing pages, SEO, social content, and fast website creation with AI. |
| SMEs | Very suitable – especially for company websites, online stores, bookings, payment functions, marketing tools, and CRM-related website processes. Wix describes eCommerce, scheduling, marketing, and business solutions as integrated features. |
| Large enterprises | Suitable – especially with Business Elite, Enterprise, and Wix Studio for larger teams, an advanced developer platform, collaboration, and more complex websites. |
| Agencies / designers | Very suitable – for fast client websites, templates, AI-supported website generation, SEO, content, design customization, and handover to clients. |
Hosting & Data
1) On-prem / local hosting
Meaning: The company operates the solution on its own hardware or within its own infrastructure. In the strictest sense, not only the application runs locally, but ideally the model as well.
2) Private cloud / data center
Meaning: The solution runs in a dedicated or more clearly separated cloud environment, often with a hosting provider or hyperscaler, but in a German data center or in a particularly controlled environment.
3) EU SaaS / managed
Meaning: The provider operates the solution itself as a service. The company uses the tool as a ready-made cloud service, ideally with EU data residency.
4) Hybrid
Meaning: One part of the processing remains internal / local / in a private cloud, while another part runs in an external cloud or EU SaaS.
5) AVV / DPA
Meaning: This is the data processing agreement or Data Processing Addendum. It governs that the provider processes personal data on behalf of the customer and is bound by the customer's instructions.
6) No training
Meaning: The provider does not use your prompts, uploads, attachments, chat histories, or outputs for training or improving the general model — ideally excluded by contract.
7) Open-source / transparency path
Meaning: There is a path toward greater technical transparency and sovereignty, for example through:
- open models
- documented components
- self-hostable parts
- traceable architecture
- export / switching options

Overall assessment of hosting & data:
Wix is primarily a managed SaaS website builder with multi-cloud hosting, AI website creation, editor, templates, domains, eCommerce, bookings, marketing tools, SEO, and an app market. Traditional on-premises or local hosting of the Wix platform is not publicly documented as a standard option. Positives include ease of use, integrated hosting, global CDN, security features, automatic infrastructure, AI creation tools, and business features without requiring your own server administration. A critical point is that users cannot choose the server location themselves, Wix uses cloud and data center infrastructure worldwide, and data protection depends heavily on configurations such as cookie banners, forms, third-party apps, tracking, payments, and integrations.
Conclusion:
Wix is very well suited for fast, cloud-based websites, shops, and marketing pages without technical effort. For strict EU data residency, on-prem requirements, or very sensitive data, Wix is only suitable to a limited extent and should be reviewed before use with a DPA, third-party assessment, and proper data protection configuration. Strengths & Weaknesses at a Glance
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| – Very low barrier to entry: no-code, drag-and-drop, AI-powered page creation. | – The free version runs with Wix branding and a wixsite.com subdomain. |
| – Many core features in one platform: hosting, domain, SEO, marketing, bookings, e-commerce. | – Payments and serious commerce features are only available starting with Core. |
| – Free entry possible; upgrade without rebuilding. | – Prices vary by region/taxes; this makes comparison less transparent. |
| – Large template selection and strong personalization. | – In terms of data protection law, use is not automatically GDPR-compliant, because configuration, cookie management, third-party apps, and AI usage must also be handled responsibly by the operator. |
| – Extensive security/compliance program. | – AI features partly use external AI providers. |
| - Switching to other providers with a finished website is only possible with limitations. Wix is a closed system (SaaS - Software as a Service), which means that the website builder and the content are permanently tied to Wix's servers. |

GDPR-compliant use possible?
GDPR assessment: From a GDPR perspective, Wix is conditionally suitable.
Positive is that Wix provides a Data Processing Agreement for users, which governs the processing of personal data between Wix and users. Wix also states that website operators can build a GDPR-compliant website with Wix, but makes it clear that website operators themselves remain responsible for what data they collect and how they process it. Also positive are security measures such as hosting on AWS and Google Cloud Platform, Equinix colocation, certifications of the infrastructure providers such as ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, SOC 1, SOC 2, SOC 3, and PCI DSS Level 1, as well as access controls and security monitoring.
Negative is that Wix uses servers and cloud providers worldwide, may share data with affiliates, third-party providers, analytics, advertising, and social media partners, and the website operator must configure external apps, tracking, cookies, forms, and payment providers in a privacy-compliant manner themselves.
Server location: Wix has servers in multiple locations worldwide, including Europe and the USA; according to Wix, users currently cannot select or change the host server themselves. Further links: Wix DPA, Wix GDPR Help, Wix Security Measures, Wix Host Server.
